The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized 916 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), totaling 22,900 litres, in Adamawa State.
The fuel, valued at ₦22.9 million, was intercepted by the NCS special task force, Operation Whirlwind, during patrols in Maiha, Mubi, Gurin, and Belel.
The National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs Hussein Ejibunu, disclosed this during a press briefing on Friday.
He stated that the operation was based on intelligence and aimed at curbing fuel smuggling in the region.
Ejibunu also noted that the seizure follows a similar operation on March 13 in Taraba State, where customs officers confiscated 34,470 litres of PMS in Gembu.
He stressed that fuel smuggling remains a significant economic challenge, driven by the potential for illicit profits.
Ejibunu commended the officers involved for their dedication and professionalism, while urging the public to report suspicious activities to the nearest customs office.
The Customs Area Controller for Adamawa/Taraba, Comptroller Garba Bashir, praised Operation Whirlwind for its role in reducing fuel smuggling.
A representative from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Grace Dauda, also commended the effort and called for continued collaboration to protect the nation’s economic interests.
