The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it impounded 3, 247 cartons of frozen poultry products worth N14.6 million during the sixth and seventh weeks of its ‘Operation Hawk Descend’.
The amount showed a decrease when compared to seizures recorded within the second and fifth week of the operation.
A breakdown of past seizures showed that 6,206 cartons valued at N21.8 million was recorded in the second week and 5,915 cartons worth N28.6 million in the third week of Hawk Descend.
The Service in the fourth week recorded seizures worth N35.6 million which consist of 5, 472 cartons while 13,960 cartons valued at N45.5million was seized in the fifth week.
Customs Deputy Public Relations Officer, Joseph Attah in a statement on Wednesday said the poultry products were impounded at different locations along Badagry, Agbara Creeks and Villages in Ogun state, Seme, Gbaji and Owode Creeks in Lagos and Idiroko axis.
A breakdown of the seizures showed that 1,120 cartons with a value of N5, 040,000 came from Ogun State,; 146 cartons with a value of N657,000 came from Seme; 1,981cartons with a value of N8,914,500 was recorded by the Federal Operations Unit, FOU Zone A, Lagos; bringing the total to 3,247 cartons, with a total value of N14,611,500.
While commending the steadfastness of the operatives in the operation, the management of the service assured the general public of its determination to continue the onslaught against the smugglers of the banned products.
Traders and consumers of the banned frozen poultry products were also advised to patronize local farmers as this will create job opportunities for youths, boost economy and save Nigerians from diseases associated with consumption of dangerous chemicals used in preserving the banned poultry products.
