The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service said it recorded 1,608 seizures between January and March 2015.
The command said yesterday in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Okpara that the seizures made by the jetty monitoring team at Yekeme have a Duty Paid Value (DPV)of N6.3 million.
She gave a breakdown of the smuggled items to include 348 bags of rice with DPV of N1.9 million, 842 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with DPV of N3.7, 305 cartons of frozen poultry products with DPV N1.8 million and 113 kegs of vegetable oil valued at N643, 000.
Meanwhile, Controller of the Command, Comptroller Yusuf Umar during a visit to some of the out stations of the command including Badagry, Yekeme and Idiroko has charged the officers to redouble their effort in the fight against smuggling.
Umar told the officers to ensure the maintenance of the refurbished boats by the command and the proper handle of arms and ammunition.
The Controller also visited his counterpart in Seme and Ogun commands where he sought collaboration and synergy especially on information sharing.
In the same vein, the Comptroller paid visits to the Baale of Pashi at Yekeme and the Baale of Akere where they both promise to synergize with NCS in warning their wards on the dangers of smuggling.
