A sailor in urgent need of medical attention has been airlifted from a United States submarine operating in the icy waters off Nuuk, after Danish military authorities mounted a swift evacuation mission. The incident occurred approximately seven nautical miles from the Greenlandic capital, where the submarine had been navigating under challenging Arctic conditions.
In a statement released on Saturday, Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command confirmed that the stricken crew member was successfully transferred ashore and handed into the care of local health services in Greenland. The patient has since been admitted to hospital in Nuuk for urgent treatment.
The rescue was executed by a helicopter operated by the Danish Defence, underscoring the logistical reach and rapid-response capability maintained by Denmark in the remote High North, where vast distances and severe weather frequently complicate emergency operations at sea.
