Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine has placed a massive order for eleven 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships, valued at approximately $3.1 billion.
The order will be split between two shipbuilders: five vessels will be constructed by China’s Guangzhou Shipyard International, and the remaining six by South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean.
Each vessel is priced between $265 million and $295 million.
A delivery date for the new containerships has yet to be confirmed.
This latest move signals a shift for Evergreen Marine, transitioning from methanol dual-fuel vessels to LNG.
The company’s decision likely reflects growing concerns about the future availability of green methanol.
While LNG remains a fossil fuel, it is currently considered a more readily available alternative.
This substantial order follows Evergreen’s 2023 purchase of twenty-four 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel containerships from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Nihon Shipyard.
That order, costing around $196 million per vessel, totalled approximately $3.11 billion and represented the largest ever contract placed with SHI, covering 16 of the 24 vessels.
