Troubled by the upsurge in piracy on the state waterways, Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has approved the appointment of former leader of defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, Mr. Ebikabowei Victor-Ben, aka Boyloaf, and others to lead a special task force to curb criminality in the creeks of the state.
The 11-man task force, according to a statement, is to complement the activities of the marine branch of Operation Doo Akpor in safeguarding the lives and property of the people along the waterways.
The special task force is also expected to stem the tide of kidnappings, illegal bunkering and oil pipeline vandalism that have been on the increase in recent times in the state.
The governor, in the statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said the task force was expected to liaise with the Operation Doo Akpor marine component in carrying out their job.
