The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has begun moves to permanently move petroleum tankers out of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) access road in Lagos.
The Managing Director, FAAN, Saleh Dunoma, said that the move was part of the efforts to ensure safety and security on the access road.
A statement by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, FAAN, Yakubu Dati, stated that in line with the agency’s resolve, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps recently paid a working visit to FAAN corporate headquarters, Lagos.
Issues discussed during the visit included how to move the petroleum tankers out of the area and relocate them to a safe and secure place.
The statement quoted Dunoma as saying that it was the primary duty of the petroleum marketers to provide a permanent parking space for its tankers, but due to the agency’s concern for safety and security of airport users, it would assist the marketers in ensuring that the tankers were parked and positioned appropriately.
Those present at the meeting were members of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers; the FAAN Director of Airport Operations, Capt. Henry Omeogu; the Director of Maintenance and Engineering, Femi Ogunode; the Acting Director of Security Service, Omaghomi J.J; the General Manager, Business Development, Abubakar Achimugu; and the Assistant General Manager, Yahya Dantoro.
It will be recalled that during his recent tour of facilities at the airport, the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, mandated FAAN to ensure the tankers were relocated and prevented from further obstructing the flow of traffic along the access road.
