Fishermen from Ibaka, Mbughu Unyenge, Effiat and other communities in the Mbo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, have expressed disappointment over the inability of security agencies to check the activities of sea robbers in the area.
The fishermen who spoke with journalists said they had been starving since their only means of livelihood had been blocked by the criminals.
Some of the fishermen said they had lost confidence in the Nigerian security arrangement.
A fisherman, who lost two of his outboard engines to the sea robbers on Thursday, Mr. Edet Amba, said life had not been fair to him. He said he withdrew three of his children who were at private schools as he could no longer go out for fishing at the seas for fear of being killed.
He explained that apart from the loss of his outboard engines, fishing nets, anchors, fish, and money to the sea pirates, all efforts he and his other colleagues had made to draw the attention of the Nigerian government to security challenges at seas, had not yielded result.
