Chief (Mrs.) Oluwakemi Sarumi, wife of former Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Chief Adebayo Babatunde Sarumi, is dead.
Family sources said Mrs. Sarumi died on late Friday night at the age of 74.
She was said to have been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Lagos since May 2020, before her demise on Friday.
No official statement has been issued by the family on the death.
A successful businesswoman, the late matriarch of the Sarumi family was seen as a major pillar of her husband who served as Managing Director of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) from 1996 to 2003 and as Managing Director of NPA from October 2003 to May 2007.
Chief Adebayo Sarumi is regarded as the father of the modern day seaports in Nigerian. He executed the Federal Government’s port reforms programme during his tenure culminating in port concession and the involvement of private firms in the provision of marine services and port channel dredging.
Chief (Mrs.) Sarumi is survived by her husband and five children.
