HIGHWAY ROBBERY
Police rout 17 fake Customs officers in Ogun
The Ogun State Police Command recently dislodged, but failed to arrest any person among a 17-man suspected armed robbery gang dressed in fake Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) uniform and had laid ambush to rob unsuspecting motorists along Abeokuta-Ibadan Road.
The bandits, it was learnt, had last Thursday laid siege at a strategic position between Olodo and Kila villages in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State around 3:00 pm, pretending to be personnel of the Customs Service on duty.
But the Police, acting on a tip-off, moved quickly to botch the activities of the robbers.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Ogun State Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident, said that the robbers sought to take advantage of the existing Customs checkpoint along that particular road to rob unsuspecting motorists.
Adejobi said that the robbers, however, fled the scene, on hearing that Police personnel, including those attached to the state’s anti-crime task force, the Quick Response Service (QRS), and other formation.
The PPRO warned unsuspecting members of the public to be wary of fake checkpoints, noting that the Nigeria Customs no longer maintains any checkpoint along the Abeokuta-Ibadan Road.
