The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone `A’ of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ikeja, intercepted 2, 595 contraband valued at N890.07 million with duty paid value of N1.04 billion between January and September.
This was contained in a report made available to newsmen on Friday in Lagos by the Public Relations Officer of the Unit, Uche Ejesieme.
The report said that the unit apprehended 196 suspects involved in smuggling the contraband.
It said that the suspects were apprehended in connection with smuggled frozen poultry products, used vehicles and rice brought in through the border areas.
It said that other contraband seized were used tyres, used fridges, used vehicles, used clothing, used compressors and noodles.
The report said that as an enforcement arm of the NCS, the unit had put in place measures to check smuggling activities in all areas of its coverage.
It said that the unit might not be able to disclose its sources, but it would continue to appreciate the efforts of some patriotic Nigerians who had always availed it the necessary intelligence information.
The report said such information had assisted the unit in prosecuting its campaigns on smuggling and urged Nigerians to avoid any act or conduct that would have devastating negative effects on the economy.
The unit said that it was determined to address the problem of smuggling.
