Lekki Deep Seaport in Lagos weekend received Maersk Edirne, the largest containership to visit Nigeria.
The 12 years old Maersk Edirne, sailing under the flag of Singapore, has carrying capacity is 13,092 TEU and her current draught is reported to be 12.3 meters. The ship has length overall (LOA) of 366 meters and width of 48 meters.
The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello-Koko, who announced the berthing of the ship on Sunday, said the vessel came into Nigeria with only “3,376 total cargo onboard”.
“This development validates the assurances I gave during the signing of the presidential/ministerial performance bond in December 2023. The authority under my watch is poised to provide the leadership and technical guidance required to maximise the potentials inherent in our marine and blue economy,” Koko said in a statement issued by the agency.
“The Lekki Deep Seaport has by this feat, in addition to its pioneering of full automation and facilitation of transhippment, proven its readiness to exceed stakeholders’ expectations,” he said.
