The Rector, Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, Joshua Okpo is dead.
A source close to the late Rector, who confirmed his sudden death to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY, said Okpo died yesterday morning in his residence in Abuja.
It was gathered that Okpo had travelled to Abuja from Oron, Akwa Ibom State to defend the academy’s budget before the National Assembly.
The cause of his death is not yet known as efforts to reach the institute’s spokesman, Siddi Mkpandiok has not been successful.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on July 31 renewed Okpo’s appointment as MAN Oron Rector for a second and final term of four years.
Okpo was initially appointed Rector in 2011 by former President Goodluck Jonathan but his appointment was not confirmed until April 16, 2012.
A Director in the Transport Ministry, he was posted to the academy as Administrator with the sole mandate of revamping the institution.
SHIPS & PORTS DAILY had reported in its edition of Monday November 30 that the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi penultimate week ordered the immediate audit of the academy’s accounts.
