The Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN) has expressed its heart-felt grief over the death of three members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) who lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident over the weekend.
In a press statement signed by its President, Mr Bolaji Akinola and the Secretary-General, Mr Funso Olojo, the body said it was not only shocked by the tragic incident but was equally agonized given the fact that ten other journalists, who were all on active service for the union, were injured in the accident.
MARAN, while wishing the souls of the departed eternal rest in the bosom of the Lord, also asked God to grant the injured quick recovery and restoration of their health to enable them join their grieving families and colleagues.
One of the injured journalists and Secretary of the Lagos State Council of NUJ, Mr. Sylva Okereke, was a member and former Public Relations Officer of MARAN.
The apex association of maritime journalists further condoles with the entire fraternity of journalists in the country over the unfortunate incident, while wishing the families of the departed colleagues fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The body further prayed that God, in His infinite mercy, would put an end to such tragic incident among journalists in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, MARAN has cancelled all its official engagements in line with the seven day-mourning declared by the NUJ.
According to its President, all MARAN members are expected to put on a touch of black throughout the mourning period in honour of the departed colleagues.
The MARAN President further directed all members of the association to sign the condolence register at the Lagos NUJ Secretariat, Iyalla Street, Alausa, Ikeja.
