The Nigerian maritime community is in deep mourning following the sudden death of Mrs. Mary Hamman, former President of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria. Mrs. Hamman passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at the age of 64, after a very brief illness.
Mrs. Hamman was a respected and influential figure in the industry. Elected President of WISTA Nigeria in November 2015, she served with distinction for four years, leading the association through a period of significant growth and impact. Under her stewardship, WISTA Nigeria strengthened its role as a voice for women in maritime, advocating for gender equality, capacity building, and professional development within the industry.
In addition to her contributions to WISTA, Mrs. Hamman had a distinguished career at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), where she rose to the rank of Deputy Director before retiring in 2020. Throughout her time at NIMASA, she was widely regarded as a consummate professional—known for her expertise, integrity, and tireless efforts to enhance safety and operational standards within Nigeria’s maritime sector.
Her sudden passing has shocked colleagues, friends, and associates, many of whom remember her as a passionate advocate for the empowerment of women and a steadfast supporter of maritime development initiatives.
