The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has strongly condemned the arrest of Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), by the Department of State Security (DSS) on Monday.
According to a statement by MWUN Head of Media, Kennedy Ikemefuna, Ajaero was scheduled to address a global assembly of workers at the Trade Union Congress in the UK but was arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport without a warrant.
MWUN President-General, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, described the arrest as an infringement on Ajaero’s fundamental human rights, saying he is not a fugitive and his detention is unjustifiable by law. Adeyanju called for Ajaero’s immediate release and vowed to comply with directives from the NLC if he is not freed.
The union views the arrest as an act of intimidation and humiliation, and demands Ajaero’s release to prevent further action.
