The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has disassociated itself from the planned nationwide protest scheduled to start on August 1, 2024.
In a statement, John Ikemefuna, Head of Media for the Union, emphasised that MWUN executives and officials are not connected to the individuals organising the protest.
Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Vice President Global, International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), stated that MWUN is a responsible union providing essential services in the maritime sector.
He highlighted the union’s commitment and patriotism during the COVID-19 lockdown, when members worked tirelessly despite stay-at-home orders.
Adeyanju clarified that MWUN, as an affiliate of the NLC, will only participate in industrial strike actions or coordinated lawful activities directed by the NLC.
He emphasised that the union will not engage in any protest not sanctioned by the NLC.
Adeyanju warned MWUN members to avoid participating in protests at terminals, jetties or oil and gas platforms, and to be vigilant against hoodlums who may exploit the situation to cause harm.
He urged MWUN members to remain sensitive to potential miscreants who may infiltrate the sector under the guise of protests, referencing the lingering effects of the Endsars incident.
