Upgrading the ports` infrastructures and creating an efficient maritime transport system are Cyprus` key priorities, Minister of Communications and Works Marios Demetriades has said in an intervention at the EU Transport Council meeting which took place in Luxembourg.
The Council of Ministers dealt with issues relating to maritime, air and land transport. According to an official press release, in his intervention, the Minister of Communications said that the development, continuous improvement of port infrastructure and the creation of an effective maritime transport system are key priorities for the Government of Cyprus.
In this context, he expressed Cyprus` support for the compromise proposal of the Italian Presidency, noting that it is a balanced proposal that achieves the original objectives for improving market access and enhancing transparency.
The Cypriot Minister said that the proposal does not ignore the diversity of the European port sector and takes into account the concerns of Member States, including Cyprus.
During the Ministers` Council, the European Commission briefed the Council on developments at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as regards discussions about reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping.
The Minister of Communications noted Cyprus` great interest in this regard and said that Cyprus chairs the Working Group set up in the IMO for this issue.
He pointed out that the implementation of international measures in a sector such as shipping, ensures fair competition and long term competitiveness of the EU shipping industry.
