The Nigerian Navy has intercepted and seized 4,000 litres of a substance suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in Lagos waters as part of its ongoing efforts to curb economic sabotage and enhance maritime security across the state and its coastal communities.
The operation was carried out by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT patrol team stationed at Tarkwa Bay, according to a statement by the Executive Officer of NNS BEECROFT, Captain Idongesit Udoessien, who represented the Commander, Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel.
Udoessien disclosed that the interception occurred on 11 October 2025 following the effective use of the Nigerian Navy’s Maritime Domain Awareness facility at the Western Regional Control Centre of the Falcon Eye Alignment System.
The system enabled the patrol team to track and intercept the vessel around the Commodore Pool within the Atlas Cove area.
He explained that the suspects abandoned the boat and fled upon sighting the naval patrol team, leaving behind the cargo of suspected illegally refined diesel.
The seized product, he added, has since been handed over to Superintendent Amoo Kehinde, a representative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, for further investigation and necessary action.
