The collaborative effort between the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) at Tincan Island Port has yielded significant results with the interception of N2.2 billion worth of hard drugs concealed in an imported container over the weekend.
Two individuals allegedly linked to the illegal shipment have been taken into custody.
Mitchell Ofoyeju, NDLEA Commander at Tincan Island Port, revealed that the chairman of the anti-narcotics agency, Brigadier-General Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised the operation, describing the seizure as “massive”, and commending both NDLEA and Customs personnel for their vigilance and coordination.
“The operation, which took place on Friday, December 13, 2024, during a routine security examination of a container from Montreal, Canada, destined for MIGFO Bonded Terminal at Tincan Island Port, Lagos, delivered unprecedented results,” Ofoyeju stated.
The NDLEA chairman expressed his appreciation to the Customs Comptroller of Tincan Island Port, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, for working closely with the NDLEA team. According to him, their joint coordination and thorough inspection revealed the illegal shipment.
“The joint search uncovered an astounding haul of narcotics: 44 extra-large bags containing cannabis indica, comprising 1,735 parcels with a total weight of 867.5 kilograms, as well as six coolers containing 87 packs of methamphetamine, weighing 78.3 kilograms. In total, the seizure amounted to 945.8 kilograms of illicit drugs, valued at N2.2 billion,” he said.
The two arrested suspects, Nwanolue Emeka and Friday Ogbe, are currently in custody as investigations continue to unravel the broader network behind the drug trafficking operation.
