The Seme border command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the successful facilitation of exports totaling 28,000 metric tonnes of cargo, valued at N7.85 billion (approximately $4.99 million USD), to neighbouring countries.
This was disclosed by the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, during a press briefing on Thursday.
According to Oramalugo, the Nigeria Export Supervision Scheme (NESS) recorded a revenue of N39.26 million, with an additional surcharge of N2.43 million.
He emphasized that the command generated N743.7 million in revenue during February 2025, crediting the success to a renewed focus on blocking revenue leakages and promoting economic growth.
Oramalugo stated that the command facilitated the export of over 28,000 metric tonnes of goods, amounting to 806 trucks, with the NESS payment standing at N39.26 million and a total surcharge of N2.43 million.
He added that the command would continue leveraging trade facilitation initiatives to create a more efficient, transparent, and predictable trade environment.
During February 2025, the Seme border command intensified its crackdown on smuggling, leading to the interception of contraband worth N267 million.
The confiscated items included parcels of cannabis sativa (marijuana), packs of tramadol, bottles of codeine syrup, and bags of smuggled rice weighing 50 kilograms each.
Additionally, the seizures comprised kegs of petroleum motor spirit (PMS), sacks of used shoes, bales of used clothes, and pieces of used tyres.
As part of its inter-agency collaboration, the seized cannabis was officially handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.
Oramalugo reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining strict enforcement measures and enhancing revenue generation through proactive anti-smuggling efforts and efficient trade practices.
