Nigeria has officially endorsed amendments to eight Codes of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006, reaffirming its commitment to the protection, welfare, and rights of seafarers.
The amendments address critical areas including protection against discrimination, recognition of seafarers as key workers, improved access to shore-based welfare services, and enhanced safeguards against shipboard violence, harassment, and bullying, alongside updated standards for accommodation and recreational facilities onboard vessels.
Leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 5th Special Tripartite Committee Meeting of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland, was the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, represented by the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola.
In his remarks, the Minister emphasized Nigeria’s unwavering dedication to promoting decent working and living conditions for seafarers, citing the recent approval of a new minimum wage in line with ILO standards as a testament to this commitment. He also commended the ILO for fostering international dialogue and collaboration on maritime labour standards.
Seizing the opportunity on the global platform, he reiterated Nigeria’s aspiration to secure a seat in Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council during the upcoming elections later this year.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s election would bolster Africa’s representation in shaping policies on fair labour practices, environmental sustainability, and technical cooperation in the global maritime sector.
The Special Tripartite Committee, comprising member states that have ratified the MLC 2006 — many of whom also participate actively in IMO meetings — serves as a key forum for advancing international maritime labour standards. This strategic engagement marks Nigeria’s most expansive campaign effort yet to strengthen its presence and influence within global maritime governance structures.
