The Nigerian Navy has concluded its annual sea inspection exercise, Ex Din Mingi (“safe waters” in Ibani), held on 18–19 November under the Eastern Naval Command to strengthen the protection of the nation’s maritime interests.
Flagged off at NNS SHERE in Onne, Rivers State, by the Fleet Officer Commanding, Rear Admiral Donald Okehie, the exercise tested operational readiness and inter-agency coordination.
Okehie noted that the drill aligned with his command’s four pillars: professionalism, operational readiness, welfare and inter-agency collaboration.
Nine ships of various classes, three helicopters, an EP55 UAV and multiple assault boats from the Navy, Army and Air Force participated.
Key scenarios included an opposed boarding of a simulated hijacked LNG vessel, requiring specialised tactics to neutralise threats without compromising safety. NDLEA operatives also joined to identify illicit substances aboard a suspected ship, further strengthening joint operations.
Okehie said the exercise enhances preparedness for real-world maritime challenges and supports the Chief of Naval Staff’s mission to maintain a highly motivated force capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.
He added that previous operations have led to significant successes against economic sabotage and other maritime crimes.
He assured that all participating units adhered strictly to rules of engagement and standard operating procedures throughout the exercise.
