Nigerian Shippers’ Council denies allegation of irregular recruitment

The Nigeria Shippers’ Council (NSC) has denied allegations by a group of of its workers that it embarked on irregular recruitment.

As reported exclusively by SHIPS & PORTS DAILY on August 29, 2016, some workers who described themselves as “Concerned Staff” of the NSC recently petitioned the Presidency over what they called “irregular staff recruitment and placement” in the Council.

The aggrieved workers cited the case of an Assistant Director (names withheld), whom they said was also being considered for the post of a substantive Director by the NSC management.

But a statement signed by the council’s Deputy Director of Public Relations, Ignatius Nweke, sent to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY, said there has not been any recruitment in the organisation of recent.

“We believe that the story is the handiwork of one or two staff who are bent on distracting the management from its determination to reposition the Council to playing its statutory role, an effort widely acknowledged and commended,” Nweke said.

“For the purpose of setting the records straight, we wish to state as follows: That there was no ‘irregular recruitment/placement in the Council at any time; that the case of engagement of a staff in the 90’s cannot be taken as one of recruitment which connotes mass intake of personnel in an agency, as contained in the said publication.

“During the period of the so-called recruitment, promotion and placement as stated by the petitioners, the present management was not in place, and this reveals the mischief and misrepresentation which was all the while the intention of such one or two disgruntled staff and perhaps their external sponsors,” he stated further.
