The federal government on Wednesday granted approval to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for the construction, delivery and commissioning of 100 channel marking Buoys at the cost of $3.5 million (N560 million).
Briefing state House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, special adviser to the President on media and publicity, Reuben Abati, said the approval for the contract followed a memo tendered by Transport minister, Idris Umar before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The minister, who was also at the briefing, said “the contract was approved in favour of Messrs Marina Energy Limited in the sum of $3.5 million inclusive of all taxes with a completion period of 25 months. The scope of work in that contract shall include the construction of 100 number buoys, their delivery and commissioning at Lagos, Warri, Port Harcourt and Calabar ports’ access channels.”
He said upon completion and total installation, the buoys will help to delineate the channels leading to the ports and also enhance safe navigation in and out of the ports.
The council also approved another memo for the augmentation of an existing contract for land reclamation at Obang-Iju-Ibiro-Oba-Ojinba-Okujagu-Ama water front and bank swarms.
The federal government had last year approved the same contract for N7.9 billion.
Umar said the augmentation, valued at N900 million, followed compelling need to enhance the work and the need to reclaim additional hectares “and in some areas to put in more reinforcement on the project.”
