The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced that it received an overwhelming 573,519 applications during its 2025 recruitment exercise. The application portal, which was open for only a week from December 27, 2024, to January 2, 2025, attracted an unprecedented number of job seekers vying for just 3,927 available positions.
The Federal Government had approved the recruitment of 3,927 officers in December 2024 as part of efforts to boost trade facilitation and support Nigeria’s ongoing economic recovery. The available positions span various roles, including support staff and general duty personnel.
Speaking on Tuesday, the Customs National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, provided a detailed breakdown of the applicants across the different ranks and cadres.
“For the general duty under the superintendent cadre, we received 249,218 applications, with 27,722 of these from candidates holding HNDs and university degrees,” Maiwada said.
He further explained that the inspector cadre, for those with National Certificates for Education (NCE) or National Diplomas (ND), had 115,634 applications.
In the customs assistant category, meant for candidates with secondary school certificates, 153,593 people applied for general duty positions, while 14,400 applied for support staff roles.
Additionally, 12,952 candidates applied for support staff positions under other categories.
The staggering number of applications underscores the intense demand for employment opportunities in Nigeria, with over 570,000 job seekers competing for a limited number of positions in the Nigeria Customs Service. The NCS will now begin the rigorous process of reviewing and selecting candidates for the available vacancies.
