The Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and the All Progressives Congress (APC) led federal government of plans to assassinate Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.

The party explained that the withdrawal of the security detail to the governor on Monday was to expose him to danger of assassination and possibly intimidate him to succumb to “their rigging plans” over the national and state assembly re-run elections slated for December 10, in the state.

The Spokesman of the Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye in a statement on Tuesday, described the act as despicable, a complete affront and declaration of war on Rivers people using the apparatus of state.

“This latest development has confirmed that the former Governor of Rivers State and now Minister of Transport, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi in collaboration with his party’s led federal government and its security agencies has finalized plans to assassinate the Governor of Rivers State.

“This is not acceptable and if anything happens to the Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, his family or any of our party members or supporters in Rivers State, Rivers people and indeed, all Nigerians should hold Chibuike Amaechi and his party leaders responsible.

“It is common knowledge that since the inception of this government, the APC leaders have approached elections in the country with different rigging methods.

“Nigerians will recall that Governor Wike alerted on the plots of enemies led by government at the center to murder him. A serious indication was the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, Mr. Folusho Adebanjo, working on the order of desperate APC led federal government withdrew more than 70 percent of security personnel detailed to the Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt,” the PDP said.

Meanwhile the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday in Abuja, described as hoax the alarm raised by Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers that his life was being threatened.

Alhaji Mai Mala Buni, the APC National Secretary, stated this in a statement in reaction to the allegation.

“The report by the Rivers State Government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleging the withdrawal of Wike’s security aides and an assassination threat on the Governor is a hoax.

He stressed that nobody was after Wike`s life.

The APC national scribe added that the governor and the PDP’s diversionary and false alarm was hinged on the reality that they would lose the legislative re-run elections once security was tightened in Rivers.

He stressed that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration had successively demonstrated the political will to ensure that all elections were free, transparent and credible.

He added that Saturday’s Rivers` legislative re-run would not be different.

Buni added that the APC administration did not subscribe to evil machinations where government institutions were used to achieve political ends.

He, however, urged security agencies to ensure that the Dec.10, legislative re-run elections in Rivers was devoid of crisis.

The APC national secretary said that thugs must not be allowed to steal the votes of the Rivers electorate on Saturday.

The Rivers state government had raised the alarm of ‘plot to assassinate its Governor, Nyesom Wike.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Austin Tam-George, said this in a statement on Monday in Port Harcourt.
