The police are still gathering information surrounding the murder of a Customs officer, Aliu A.D attached to the Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), according to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Uche Ejesieme.
Aliu, an Assistant Superintendent of Customs attached to the Ashaye exit gate of the command was shot and killed by unknown gunmen at the National Bus stop area of the Tin Can Island port December, last year.
Aliu was reportedly trailed to the area around 10pm while returning from work when he was waylaid by the gunmen who tried to snatch his bag but he resisted them. Aliu was shot in the ensuing scuffle.
Ejesieme said he could not confirm if it was a case of assassination or arm robbery but the command is relying on police investigation to help unravel the circumstances and also find out the immediate cause of the incident.
Speaking to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY at the weekend, Ejesieme said the matter is with the Inspector General of Police Instant Response Team but they are yet to officially brief the command on investigation made so far on the issue.
“The matter is with the police and we are waiting for them to formally report to us on how far they have gone. They are yet to brief us officially so we need to wait for the report. We are not the ones that will arrest the suspects,” he said.
