The Olympic and Paralympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) have announced that the Port of Los Angeles will be one of two venues to host sailing events during the 2028 Olympic Games.
LA28 cited the port’s favourable racing conditions and excellent spectator viewing opportunities as key factors in the decision. Belmont Shore in the City of Long Beach has also been confirmed as a venue for several sailing events.
The Port of Los Angeles will host six boat classes: Men’s and Women’s Dinghy, Men’s and Women’s Skiff, Mixed Dinghy, and Mixed Multihull. Meanwhile, Belmont Shore will stage four board events: Men’s and Women’s Windsurfing, and Men’s and Women’s Kiteboarding.
This announcement marks a historic milestone for the Port of Los Angeles, which previously hosted Olympic sailing events in 1932.
“After close coordination with the Cities of Los Angeles and Long Beach, along with collaboration from World Sailing, we are excited about the opportunity to utilise two of the best locations along the Pacific coastline for sailing competitions in 2028,” said LA28 Chief Executive Officer Reynold Hoover.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass added, “Sailing has a long history in our city, and San Pedro will shine on the world stage.”
To maximise viewership and media coverage, the sailing events will be staged consecutively. The board events will take place first at Belmont Shore, followed by the boat competitions at the Port of Los Angeles. The two venues are approximately 10 miles apart.
