Two suspected cult members, Mesu Abel and Dennis Hunga, have been arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing an engine boat and two locally-made boats.
The men were said to be members of a syndicate in Iwaya, Lagos State.
The community leader, Johnson Nusa, was said to have bought a boat from one Jebete, which was discovered missing a few days later.
When Nusa accosted Jebete to enquire about the disappearance of the boat and two others; Mesu, who was a member of the syndicate, was said to have threatened to kill him (Nusa).
He and other members of the gang allegedly stormed the Baale’s house, but they were rounded up by policemen who were alerted on the development.
It was learnt that the suspects confessed to stealing the boats.
They were arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and stealing.
The charges read in part, “That you, Mesu Abel and Dennis Hunga, did steal the sum of N30, 000, three assorted handsets, one engine boat, and two locally-made boats, valued at N1.2m, property of one Baale, Johnson Nusa, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”
The defendants pleaded not guilty.
The magistrate, Mrs. O. A. Erinle, admitted them to bail in the sum of N500,000.
