Business activities were paralysed for a good part of last week in the port city of Apapa as a result of bad roads and heavy rain that created flash floods and hampered free flow of traffic in the area. This was even as two commercial buildings situated along Warehouse Road were razed by fire in the early hours of Wednesday.
The fire spread from the building, which accomodates a company identified as Afro Commerce (W.A) Ltd, near Eleganza bus stop to another occupied by Sovereign Trust Insurance.
The heavy traffic gridlock which characterized most parts of the Apapa area made matters worse as it took a fire response team from Ijora amost two hours to get to the fire scene.
The cause of the fire was unknown as at press time.
Meanwhile many commuters spent between five and six hours in traffic to get to their offices in Apapa on Wednesday.
A commuter who identified himself as Jide, said he left his house at Ikotun at about 6 a.m. but did not get to Tin Can Island Port until 12.30 p.m.
“I have never seen this kind of traffic before. Apapa is bad for traffic but this is worse. It is has spoilt the whole day for me. I’m just thinking now of how to go back home,” he said.
Several offices visited by SHIPS & PORTS DAILY correspondent were not open by 11a.m. on Wednesday as the workers had not arrived for work.
