Transport agent docked for stealing N355,000 haulage fare

A 42-year-old transport agent, Wisdom Obi Asiegbu, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N355,000, meant for hiring a truck in Apapa.

Asiegbu is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, false pretense and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Feddy Asu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on December 23, 2018 at Apapa.

“The defendant conspired together with one Daniel at large to obtain the sum of N355,000 from one Mr Chibuzor Mbaegbu with the pretence of supplying him a truck to convey his goods which he knew to be false,” Asu said.

The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole the sum of N355,000 from Mbaegbu.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 412, 314 and 287(5) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Magistrate M.O Olubi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate must furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the matter till February 6, 2019 for mention.
