A truck driver, identified as Opeyemi Yemi, was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing damage to a shop at Kirikiri, Apapa.
Yemi is facing a two-count charge of causing damage and driving without driver’s license.
The prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo told the court that the defendant committed the offences on February 27, 2019 at about 9:10am at Berger junction, Kirikiri, Apapa.
“The defendant being the driver in charge of one DAF Truck with registration number AGL 781 XT drove same on the public highway in a manner which was reckless and dangerous to the public. Having regard to all the circumstances of the case including the nature, conditions and use of Highway Code and caused malicious damage to one shop belonging to Mrs Charity Akhazemia valued at N30,000,” Ekpo said.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 19(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Law of Lagos State 2013.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till March 27, 2019 for mention.
