Two people have died following a collision between two fully loaded 40-foot container trucks on the Cele inward axis of the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway at Mile 2, Lagos, on Thursday, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has confirmed.
According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, one victim was the driver of truck T-392 LA, who became trapped in the steering compartment and required a painstaking extrication by the agency’s rescue and recovery team. The second deceased, believed to be a trespasser with no confirmed link to the vehicles, was retrieved from beneath one of the trucks after an intensive search.
The recovery operation, carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, was successfully concluded with specialised technical support. Officers from the Ilasa Police Division secured the scene, maintained perimeter control and preserved evidence before the incident was formally handed over for investigation into its causes.
LASTMA said its General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, had expressed condolences to the victims’ families, describing the crash as a stark reminder of the risks inherent in high-density freight corridors. He reiterated the authority’s call for disciplined driving among articulated-vehicle operators, urging strict adherence to speed limits and safety regulations, particularly during night-time freight operations when heightened vigilance and adequate warning measures are critical.
The agency also urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic rules and promptly alert emergency services to hazards on major highways.
