A man was caught smoking on board an airplane, putting his life and the lives of other passengers in danger.
Apart from the danger of secondhand smoke to other passengers, smoking on board a plane poses serious fire hazard. Aviation safety experts believe that fires in flight are 100 times more dangerous than fires in a house or building.
“When you are on a passenger airplane, you are surrounded by thousands of gallons of fuel. Sometimes there are leaks, got some vapors somewhere. It is mostly about the risk of fire.
“Secondly, the air in a plane is not entirely fresh air. It is re-circulated. You might get only 50 percent fresh air. Adding smoke creates contaminated air to a mixture that is already less than fresh,” a California-based former Computer Hardware and Software Engineering, Eric Larsen, said.
Those who break the no smoking regulation face heavy fine and risk up to five years in jail, in addition to being restricted from flying future.
But this man on board a domestic flight operated by Spirit Airlines, from Florida to Minneapolis, United States of America, could not control his urge for a puff despite the warning signs.
Spirit Airlines, Inc. is an American ultra-low-cost carrier headquartered in Miramar, Florida. It is the seventh largest commercial airline in the United States.
Another passenger sitting close to the dirty looking smoker, who saw what the man did, brought it to the notice of a flight attendant.
