A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Academic Cooperation was signed in Dubai between the World Maritime University (WMU) and the Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA) on 12 May.
EIMA Chairman, Mr. Khamis Juma Buamim, and WMU President, Dr. Björn Kjerfve signed the agreement that will enable linkages in the field of maritime and marine affairs, broadly defined to include maritime safety, security, and navigational technologies, as well as marine, maritime, environmental, and oceanographic management.
Specific areas of cooperation include research, exchange of faculty members, academic and information exchange, and the potential for WMU to offer short and long term courses in Dubai. Further, the agreement promotes collaboration on distance education and field training including the possibility of EIMA hosting week-long field studies in Dubai for WMU students.
With the Fall of 2015 intake, EIMA will fund at least one student in the Malmö M.Sc. program, and WMU and EIMA will study the viability of commencing external M.Sc. programs in UAE.
EIMA was established in 2008 to support the regional and international maritime industry through the development of qualified maritime expertise that meets growing needs of the sector. The vision of EIMA is to become the Gulf’s center of excellence for maritime education.
