Year-End Boat Tragedy on Lagos Waterways Claims Six Lives

Year-End Boat Tragedy on Lagos Waterways

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) have confirmed that six passengers lost their lives in a tragic boat accident that occurred along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel in Lagos on Tuesday night.

In a joint statement released on Wednesday and signed by LASWA’s Head of Public Affairs Unit, Wuraola Alake, and NIWA’s Head of Lagos Corporate Affairs Unit, Omowunmi Yussuff, the authorities disclosed that four passengers were rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical care.

The statement said the incident involved a Savvy Marine passenger boat and occurred at about 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday, 30 December 2025. The boat was reportedly en route from Ilashe Beach House when the mishap occurred.

“Upon receiving a distress alert, LASWA and NIWA immediately activated their Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, which responded swiftly in close collaboration with the Marine Police and other first responders,” the statement said.

While four passengers were rescued alive, six others were recovered dead at the scene. Search and rescue operations are ongoing to account for all those involved in the incident.

Preliminary findings indicate that the boat may have collided with a submerged object. However, the authorities stressed that investigations are ongoing to conclusively determine the cause of the accident.

LASWA and NIWA assured the public that a thorough investigation would be carried out and that further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.

The authorities extended their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring safety on Lagos inland waterways. They also reiterated the need for strict adherence to safety regulations, including proper navigation practices and compliance with the ban on night travel.
