Crane collapses at South Africa’s Port Elizabeth

A large gantry crane at South Africa’s Port Elizabeth collapsed in heap of metal during strong winds on Tuesday morning.

South Africa’s Transnet National Ports Authority said the crane collapsed on a quayside of the Port Elizabeth Container Terminal during winds of 50 knots.

The collapse resulted in damage but no injuries were reported, Transnet confirmed.

It said an engineering team assessing extent of damage.

The incident occurred as the container ship Anna Elisabeth was docked nearby. The vessel was however not impacted.

Port Elizabeth is one of seven South African commercial ports operated by Transnet Port Terminals.
