Police arraign truck driver for reckless driving

A 43-year-old truck driver, identified as Solomon Eze, was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing damage to a truck belonging to Universal Link Company.

Eze, who resides at No 2, Olaolu Street, Ajegunle, Lagos State, is facing a two-count charge bordering on reckless and dangerous driving.

The prosecutor, Inspector Ferdinand Asu told the court that the defendant committed the offences on August 18, 2018 at about 10:30am along Kirikiri bridge.

“The defendant being the driver in charge of one Mack Truck with registration number LAGOS APP 436 XN drove same on the public highway did rolled back while on the line and caused damage to one Mack Truck with registration number LAGOS LSR 203 TD property of one Universal Link Company,” Asu said.

The prosecutor also added that the defendant drove in a manner that was reckless and dangerous to the public highway, having regard to all the circumstance of the case including nature, condition and the use of Highway Code and failed to produce vehicle licence.

According to him, the offences are punishable under section 14(b) and 14(1) of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2012.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. Magistrate Temitope Babalola granted him bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety.

The surety, according to the Magistrate, must produce proof of identity and both official and residential address must be verified.

He adjourned the case till September 19, 2018 for mention.

In a separate case, a 50-year-old truck driver, Chinedu Oti was on Friday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing damage to two cars – a Mercedes Benz ML 350 and a Lexus Jeep. Oti is facing a one-count charge of negligence.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Friday Inedu told the court that the defendant committed the offence on August 16, 2018 at about 9am at Sunki Park along Apapa/Oshodi Expressway, Olodi-Apapa.

“The defendant being the driver in charge of piterbilt tipper truck with registration number KRD 229 XU, while offloading the content conveyed in the tipper bucket, did negligently allowed the bucket to cause damage to

Mercedes Benz ML 350 worth N6 million property of one Barrister Justice Nwabuwe and Lexus Jeep worth N3 million property of one Gabriel Anekwe,” Inedu said.

According to him, the offences are punishable under section 28(1) Cap. 172 Vol. 7 of Road Traffic Regulation, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2012.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

Magistrate Temitope Babalola granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety.

The surety, according to the Magistrate must be gainfully employed.

He adjourned the case till September 19, 2018 for mention.
