The 13th biennial Maritime Seminar for Judges organised by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) under the auspices of Federal Ministry of Transport and in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI) is scheduled to commence today at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja.
The seminar with the theme “Sustainable Development in the Nigerian Maritime Sector”, is expected to be attended by Justices of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, Judges of Federal and State High Courts, Attorneys General, maritime law practitioners, shipping companies, legal advisers of public and private companies and corporations, freight forwarders, transport operators and stakeholders in the maritime and shipping industries, among others.
Deputy Director, Public Affairs of NSC, Ignatius Nweke, stated that the three-day event would expose judges of the Superior Courts of Records to recent developments in International Maritime Law, with presentation of papers on topics such as piracy, armed robbery at sea and maritime boundaries in Nigeria, issues on lay time and demurrage, introduction to maritime law and admiralty jurisdiction, and maritime insurance in relation oil and gas carriage.
“The seminar is to be chaired by the former Head of State, Chief Ernest Shonekan, GCFR, CBE. Other dignitaries expected at the occasion include the Senate President, David Mark, GCON, the Hon. Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, CON as Guests of Honour, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Mariam Aloma Muktar, GCON, who is the Special Guest of Honour while the Honourable Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar would be the Chief Host.
“It would be recalled that the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in line with its statutory obligations, had since 1995 collaborated with the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in organising the Maritime Seminar for Judges. This year’s event, will also witness the presentation of a book on the 12th edition of the seminar held in 2012,” Nweke stated in a press release sent to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY.
The seminar will be concluded in Thursday.
