30,000 migrants crossed English Channel illegally in 2023

The UK Home Office said 2023 saw the second highest number of migrants crossing the English Channel illegally

Nearly 30,000 migrants illegally reached the United Kingdom coast in 2023 by crossing the English Channel on makeshift boats, a significant decrease compared to 2022, which had been a record-breaking year.

The UK Home Office said in 2023, up to 29,437 migrants made the crossing, compared to 45,774 in 2022.

It said about 20% of the migrants who arrived on the English coast in 2023 were from Afghanistan while Iranians account for about 12% of the crossings, followed by Turks (11%), Eritreans (9%) and Iraqis (9%).
