The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has partnered with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to address the lingering issues of deaths and challenges hindering cargo evacuation and movement from seaports to hinterland. The collaboration aims to ensure safety on Nigerian roads.
At an event held in Apapa, Lagos on Wednesday, Ify Okolue, Director of Inland Transport Services Department, NSC, emphasised the need for measures to checkmate road crashes. She described the theme “Safe to Load on Nigerian Roads” as a means of empowering the motoring public through knowledge dissemination.
The partnership is in fulfilment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2017, which aims to regulate road transport and ensure safety through the Road Transport Safety Standardization Scheme (RTSSS). The objectives of the sensitization program include enlightening drivers on how to prevent crashes and ensure seamless cargo movement.
Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary/CEO of NSC, emphasised the importance of developing and enforcing the use of Vehicle Transit Areas (VTAs) to promote safety and security.
Shehu Mohammed, FRSC Corps Marshal, noted that the haulage business contributes to economic development and emphasised the need for collaboration to ensure a cleaner environment attractive to investment.
