In a significant move to enhance intermodal transportation, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced plans to launch 10 new state-of-the-art ferries this year, complementing the existing fleet of 15 ferries.
This initiative is part of the state’s broader efforts to improve public transportation, reduce travel time, and boost socio-economic development.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, during a Joint Citizens/Media Engagement Forum held in Alausa, Ikeja.
Omotoso highlighted that the new ferries, built by local engineers, are comparable to any modern ferry service globally and symbolize Nigeria’s engineering potential.
“These ferries are not just a means of transportation but also a testament to what is possible in Nigeria. Very soon, we will be commissioning about 10 of them,” Omotoso said.
He added that the addition of the new ferries will bring the total fleet to 25, further enhancing connectivity across the state’s waterways and reducing congestion on roads.
The ferry expansion is part of Lagos State’s integrated transportation strategy, which aims to seamlessly connect road, rail, and water transport systems.
Omotoso emphasised that the state government is committed to providing efficient and sustainable transportation options for its residents, aligning with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES agenda, which focuses on innovation, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.
In addition to the ferry services, the commissioner also provided updates on other key infrastructure projects, including the Solar Street Lighting Project and the Lagos Fibre-Optic Network Project.
He revealed that the solar street lighting initiative, which involves the installation of 32,000 solar-powered street lights, is 90% complete.
This project, done in partnership with private firm LEDCo, is expected to enhance public safety, reduce energy costs, and lower the state’s carbon footprint.
Similarly, the Lagos Fibre-Optic Network Project, aimed at boosting internet connectivity and positioning Lagos as Africa’s leading technology hub, has also reached 90% completion.
Governor Sanwo-Olu recently announced plans to extend the fiber-optic network by an additional 1,200 kilometers, complementing the existing 2,500 kilometers.
Omotoso commended media organisations for their role in providing feedback to both the government and citizens, ensuring transparency and accountability in governance.
He also highlighted the state’s efforts to promote tourism, particularly through the successful “Detty December” festivities, which have positioned Lagos as a global destination for end-of-year celebrations.
