Despite sluggish global economic growth in 2025, the Port of Shanghai has surged to new heights, handling an impressive 55.06 million TEU in annual container throughput, a 6.9 per cent increase on the previous year.
Its international transhipment volume rose even faster, reaching 7.92 million TEU and marking a 10.6 per cent year-on-year rise, further cementing Shanghai’s influence as a vital global shipping hub.
At the heart of this performance are SIPG’s high-efficiency logistics corridors, now serving as a powerful engine driving international trade flows.
The Yangshan Deep-Water Port Area delivered particularly strong results, recording 10.4 per cent year-on-year growth and accounting for more than half of the port’s total throughput.
Its scale and performance continue to set global benchmarks for the operation of ultra-large deep-water port clusters.
The Yangshan Phase III Terminal also crossed a major milestone, surpassing 10 million TEU in annual throughput for the first time, reinforcing its position as the central pillar of Shanghai’s port operations.
Innovation and sustainability have also taken centre stage. In 2025, the Port of Shanghai became the world’s first port to supply domestically produced green methanol to international trading vessels, signalling a significant step forward in the maritime sector’s green transition.
Amid profound changes in global trade patterns and rapid industry transformation, Shanghai’s port authorities say they have strengthened their status as a world-class shipping hub through leaner operations, expanded capacity, intelligent systems and greener technologies.
Looking ahead, SIPG plans to build greater hub resilience, drive innovation-led growth, accelerate green transformation and deepen openness and international collaboration, ensuring the port remains at the forefront of global maritime trade.
