The Nigerian Navy has called for deeper collaboration with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in hydrography, as both institutions seek to further improve navigational safety and security across Nigeria’s waters.
Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Mustapha, made the appeal during a familiarisation visit to NIMASA’s headquarters.
He praised the long-standing relationship between the two agencies, describing it as a driving force behind the growing calm and stability now seen within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
He noted that the partnership has delivered tangible results, adding that closer integration between NIMASA’s C4i Centre and the Navy’s Falcon Eye surveillance system would further strengthen maritime security through enhanced information sharing.
Mustapha also commended NIMASA for providing and maintaining platforms under the Deep Blue Project, which are operated by the Navy. He said these assets have significantly improved naval operations and reinforced Nigeria’s capacity to police its waters effectively.
Highlighting recent technological advancements, he pointed to the acquisition of two new hydrographic vessels capable of detecting the precise location and size of wrecks.
According to him, vessels such as NNS Lana and NNS Ochuzor have already contributed to higher safety standards in the maritime sector, and he stressed the importance of sustained joint efforts to maintain these gains.
NIMASA’s Director General, Dr Dayo Mobereola, described improved maritime security as central to President Bola Tinubu’s economic diversification vision.
He said a safe and secure maritime environment is vital for attracting investment, supporting shipping activities and advancing the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Mobereola reaffirmed NIMASA’s commitment to working closely with the Navy to ensure Nigeria’s maritime space remains secure and conducive for growth.
He also acknowledged the backing of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, praising his steadfast dedication to developing Nigeria’s blue economy and driving progress in the sector.
