A new chapter in Egypt’s maritime story has begun with the official launch of Red Sea Container Terminals at Sokhna Port on the Gulf of Suez.
The terminal commenced operations with the arrival of the vessel CMA CGM Iron, operated by CMA CGM, signalling the start of what industry leaders describe as a transformative development for regional and global trade.
Established under a 30-year concession agreement with the Egyptian government, the project represents a significant milestone in Egypt’s ambition to strengthen its position at the heart of international shipping.
Strategically located within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, the terminal serves as a vital gateway linking Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Designed to accommodate the world’s largest container vessels, it is set to improve transport efficiency, enhance global shipping operations, and provide Egyptian importers and exporters with faster and more reliable access to international markets.
Clemence Cheng, Managing Director for Europe at Hutchison Ports, described the inauguration as a historic moment, noting that it reflects the company’s long-term commitment to Egypt and its recognition of the country as a pivotal hub at the crossroads of global trade routes.
Christine Cabau, Executive Vice President Assets at CMA CGM, highlighted the strength of the partnership behind the project, calling it a successful joint venture between Hutchison Ports, CMA CGM, and Cosco Shipping.
She noted that the terminal combines world-class automated infrastructure with exceptional North–South rail connectivity, creating a high-capacity, high-speed gateway that will boost productivity and competitiveness for Egyptian trade.
Zhu Tao, Chairman of Cosco Shipping Ports, emphasised the terminal’s broader impact on global logistics, stating that its opening represents an essential pathway for international commerce, enabling smoother movement of goods and reinforcing trade ties between Egypt, China, and the wider global market.
With its advanced facilities and strategic location, the Red Sea Container Terminals is poised to play a defining role in shaping the future of shipping and trade across three continents.
