Iran has rejected a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as part of a ceasefire framework with the United States, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
Reports say both sides were given a two-stage plan that would begin with an immediate ceasefire, followed by a broader agreement to be finalised within 15 to 20 days. The proposal is aimed at easing tensions quickly while allowing time for longer-term negotiations.
However, a senior Iranian official was quoted as saying that Tehran would not agree to reopen the strategic waterway as part of a temporary truce. The official also said Iran would not accept externally imposed deadlines while it reviews the proposal.
The development comes as pressure increases from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has warned that further strikes on Iran’s energy and transport infrastructure could follow if no deal is reached and the Strait is not reopened by Tuesday.
