The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has unveiled plans to rehabilitate Ife Girls High School in Modakeke, Osun State, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Customs Cares, aimed at improving public infrastructure across key sectors, particularly education.
The initiative was announced in a statement shared on the Service’s official X account on Monday, following an assessment visit to the school on 29 May 2026 by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, who inspected the premises to determine the scale of rehabilitation required.
According to the NCS, the visit forms part of a wider effort to identify critical gaps in public institutions and respond through targeted interventions under the Customs Cares programme, with schools prioritised as central to its development agenda.
During the inspection, Adeniyi said the decision to step in was informed by reports on the school’s condition as well as his own on-the-ground assessment.
He noted that the facility, established over six decades ago, had once enjoyed a strong reputation for academic excellence but had suffered years of neglect that had taken a toll on its infrastructure and learning environment.
He expressed concern over the state of classrooms, science laboratories, sanitation facilities and the school library, as well as overgrown sections of the compound which he described as unsafe for students and staff.
Adeniyi assured that the rehabilitation would be carefully phased to ensure that academic activities are not disrupted.
He added that necessary approvals had been obtained and consultations with stakeholders were ongoing to ensure smooth execution of the project.
He also urged school authorities, parents and the wider community to take ownership of the upgraded facilities once completed, stressing that sustainable development depends on collective responsibility.
“We are determined to contribute towards creating a conducive learning environment that will inspire students and support educational development,” he said.
Principal of Ife Girls High School, Mrs Akinremi Martina, welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely and potentially transformative for teaching and learning outcomes.
She expressed optimism that the upgrade would reposition the school for improved academic performance.
A technical assessment conducted by Managing Director of Oak Builders Company, Engr Kehinde Adeyimo, highlighted significant structural concerns, including a damaged perimeter fence and encroachment on parts of the school land, issues he said would require urgent attention to improve security and protect the institution’s integrity.
The proposed intervention is expected to restore deteriorating infrastructure, enhance safety, and strengthen the overall learning environment, marking a significant boost for educational development in the community under the NCS’ Customs Cares initiative.
