The management of Lekki Port has reaffirmed its commitment to working with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to strengthen port security and combat illicit drug trafficking following a familiarisation visit by the agency’s Chairman, retired Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa on 24 July.
Marwa held discussions with the port’s management on enhancing security, supporting legitimate trade and protecting Nigeria’s supply chains.
The NDLEA was among the first security agencies deployed to the port after commercial operations began and continues to play a key role in maintaining international security standards.
Describing the port as a vital national asset, Marwa praised its contribution to economic growth and government revenue, stressing the need for stronger collaboration and intelligence sharing to tackle the growing threat of illicit drugs.
“Lekki Deep Sea Port is a very important component of our national economy and a source of pride for the nation. The port has continued to perform remarkably well, supporting government revenue generation and the country’s broader economic aspirations. I commend the management of Lekki Port and all the government agencies operating here for their dedication and professionalism. As Nigeria confronts the growing challenge of illicit drugs, we must deepen collaboration to ensure our ports remain secure while facilitating legitimate trade,” he said.
Lekki Port Managing Director, Wang Qiang, commended the NDLEA’s efforts in protecting Nigeria’s borders from illicit drug trafficking while facilitating the smooth movement of legitimate cargo.
Qiang said the port’s modern infrastructure, deep draught and technology-driven operations, supported by close collaboration with government agencies, position it to deliver world-class services, strengthen supply chain resilience and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in regional and global trade.
