Former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin on Tuesday told an FCT High Court that operatives of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are harassing him despite being on bail.
At the resumed hearing of his trial Tuesday, his counsel, Y.C. Maikyau (SAN) said EFCC operatives broke into a house Jibrin gave out for rent in Kubwa on 24th November, 2016 despite already submitting to the court that investigation has been concluded.
“My client is being harassed,” he said.
However, the presiding judge, Justice A.S. Umar said the court has no power to stop EFCC from carrying out its statutory duty of investigation.
He added that since there is no evidence to prove that the said investigation is connected to the ongoing trial, there is no need to speculate.
Justice Umar advised the former Chief of Naval Staff to file a complaint with the Commission or file for violation of his fundamental human rights if he feels the need to do so.
Also, the prosecution counsel, Joseph Uzor made an undertaking to cross check with the Commission and find out whether the investigation concerns the ongoing trial.
Meanwhile, the judge, pursuant to two applications brought on notice, ruled that Jibrin and Rear Admiral Bala Mshelia (rtd) are allowed to travel to the United Kingdom and United States, respectively for medical checkups but must upon their return submit their international passports back to the Registrar of the Court.
